Managing Editor
Kindermusik International, the world’s leading publisher of music-and-movement curricula, is seeking a Managing Editor to join its Curriculum Development Team. This is a unique position, and we're looking for someone unique to fill it. We are a small, experienced team that's part of a small, 100% employee-owned company. We work hard, we work fast, and we create fresh, developmentally right-on-target products for teachers, parents, and children ages newborn- 7. We are fanatic about both the quality of our products and the success of our company.
Our Managing Editor builds and oversees a complex production schedule of print, audio, digital/web material, e-books, videos, and other curriculum elements. He or she is responsible for shepherding multiple and overlapping curriculum pieces through a multi-step process, from concept to draft to completion. As such, he or she must be personable, persistent, flexible, and detail-driven, able to multi-task with sanity and to work efficiently and productively with a variety of freelancers, vendors, and co-workers. The Managing Editor reports to the VP of Product Development.
Location: Chicago, IL or Greensboro, NC areas strongly preferred
Duties:
Responsibilities for our Managing Editor include:
• Building, coordinating, and overseeing multiple production schedules
• Monitoring day-to-day activities of freelance writers, editors, designers, etc., and ensuring that work is progressing as planned
• Managing budgets, assets, and overall project organization to ensure that project requirements and deliverable dates are clearly understood, communicated to all stakeholders, and executed
• Serving as the hub of the curriculum development process, ensuring that all interconnected products are on schedule, within budget, pedagogically and editorially accurate, and aligned with multiple Kindermusik channel brand strategies and product extension requirements
• Working closely with IT and CMS teams to ensure that editorial deliverables are properly formatted and ready for publishing
• Coordinating new digital and legacy print product updates within multiple curriculum elements and across multiple product platforms
Required Education and Experience:
• BA required; MA in either early childhood, education, or a writing-intensive field of study preferred
• Minimum of 5 years experience in curriculum or educational product development for children ages newborn to 7 years of age
• Minimum of 2 years experience in digital publishing
• Expert writing, editorial, and verbal communication skills
• Proficient in Word, Excel, MS Outlook, and Google Docs; experience with Photoshop and HTML a plus
The ideal candidate:
• Has a solid working knowledge of the cognitive, physical, and social-emotional development of infants, babies, toddlers, and preschoolers. Degree in Early Childhood Development or a related field preferred
• Has a thorough knowledge, from a business perspective, of children’s media: the books, music, apps, websites, and learning devices used by today’s young children and their families
• May or may not have schooling in music
• Has very strong editorial skills, a trustworthy eye for text, and isn't overwhelmed by creating or following a complex production schedule that requires lots of 'cross-checking'
• Has a contact list full of experienced, reliable, top-quality freelance writers, illustrators, designers, editors, videographers, video editors, and audio producers on whom to call for projects
• Has substantial experience in all digital publishing processes, including the use of a CMS and digital asset management system
• Is adaptable, enjoys learning, and understands that in a small company, as the market changes, so does the work. Remains unflappable when projects shift mid-flight
• Is equally able to collaborate and to work independently
• Doesn't get stuck. (Can Google a plug-in, figure out new software, build his/her own template, ask for help. Whatever it is, just keeps solving.)
Interested candidates should send to jobs@kindermusik.com:
• A resume and cover letter, including salary history
• Three pertinent work samples. Tell us the title of each project, the age and audience it was created for, the specifics of your role in its creation, and any other pertinent information. You may send these work samples as PDFS, or provide links if the content is published online.
DEADLINE for receipt of resumes and samples is 9:00a, Monday, May 6, 2013.
